Feta cheese is usually stored in brine (saltwater) and has a strong and sharp yet pleasant taste, and crumbles easily. Goat cheese by comparison has more the feel of cream cheese. Both are very delicious in their own way.
Outside the European Union many white cheeses are sold as feta cheese, but they are often made from cow milk since cow milk is cheaper than sheep milk or goat milk.
When you go shopping for feta cheese, if you want the real thing, make sure to check the ingredients! It should only contain sheep milk and goat milk.
If it contains cow milk, it isn’t real feta cheese. If you can afford it and it is available in your area, go for imported feta cheese from Greece (2) (3). You will taste the difference.
