The three cycles are designed to clean up your diet, increase your metabolism, and teach you good lifetime eating habits. They are Accelerate, Activate, and Achieve. During the maintenance cycle, called Arrive, which is the last stage of the diet that is ongoing, you are allowed to moderately splurge on your favorite foods on the weekends including 1-2 alcoholic drinks. A Look At The 17 Day Diet
The name 17 Day Diet is actually a bit unfortunate because it misleads people into thinking that it is something that lasts just over two weeks. Instead, the diet lasts a total of 51 days, comprised of 3 cycles that each lasts 17 days, followed by a perpetual maintenance period. The seventeen days refers to the amount of time it takes to get your body balanced and in a much better working order.
17 Day Diet Cycles
The 17 Day Diet uses a series of cycles to get the body into the process of transitioning from least healthy to its most healthy. There are four cycles:
17 Day Diet Cycle 1: Accelerate
The accelerate stage is the most challenging because it is a time when people have to avoid their favorite foods and to keep calorie consumption relatively low. The diet puts most people on a 1,200 calorie per day maximum and is geared towards really cleaning up and hydrating the body.
It does this by taking away all unhealthy carbohydrates and replacing them with an unlimited number of non-starchy vegetables, lean proteins, some fruits, some probiotic foods (such as yogurt), and a bit of fat.
After a full period of this you will have lost around ten pounds, or more. You then progress to the Activate cycle.
17 Day Diet Cycle 2: Activate
The second phase of the 17 Day Diet is exactly like the first, but you can now include two servings of carbohydrates in the daily eating plan. This translates to three hundred more calories, or 1,500 calories each day.
Naturally, you will now be able to do a bit more exercise thanks to the richer diet and higher carbohydrate count.
17 Day Diet Cycle 3: Achieve
By the third cycle you are going to add a lot more food to the diet, and this is the point when fitness and nutrition experts indicate that most dieters are going to be training themselves how to eat for a healthier life.
For example, dieters in the Achieve cycle will be able to enjoy a lot of fruits, vegetables, protein, starches and fats. They will have to learn how to balance the foods and spread them out across each day, and this means that they are learning the fundamentals of good food choices.
17 Day Diet Cycle 4: Arrive
After three full cycles of dieting, the individual is usually ready to enter the final cycle, which is ongoing. This is a time when the “goal weight” has been reached and when the dieter can just follow the recommended eating plans suggested by the author of the diet.
Dr. Moreno suggests that the recommended eating plans be closely followed during the “work week” and that any “cheats” happen during the weekend. This might mean a glass of beer and a slice of pizza or it could mean just a small piece of candy; the point is to never eliminate the favorite foods.
